Can Pomegranate Juice help boost your health and well being?
Why drink Pomegranate juice?
Pomegranate juice is a wonderful way of getting one of your five a day as well as boosting your general health and well being. The juice actually tastes great, with a rich, sweet flavour which has mass appeal.
It might be slightly more expensive than your regular pure orange juice, but the small extra expense is significantly outweighed by the many additional health benefits.
What should you look for when buying Pomegranate juice?
As with other superfoods, the increasing recognition of its health benefits and increased public demand has fuelled an array of pomegranate juice products for us to choose from.
The cheaper brands are often made from concentrate and packed with preservatives and colourings, so you won’t get the same health benefits as you would from pure pomegranate juice. Many brands also feature concentrate and are highly processed, destroying many of the nutrients which make it so effective.
Clinical studies showing the health benefits of pomegranate
A recent study carried out by UCLA in 2008 found that pomegranate juice had an average of 20% more anti-oxidant potency than red wine, tea, green tea, cranberry, orange, grape, acai and blueberry juices.
The anti-oxidant polypehnols, punicalagins and anthocyanins have proven anti-inflammatory and disease fighting properties, linked to preventing neurological diseases as well as infection control and anti-aging, but the most prolific evidence is for the effect on improving heart health.
Another study published in the September 2005 American Journal of the College of Cardiologists showed that heart disease patients who regularly drank pomegranate juice showed reduced oxygen deficiency during exercise, suggesting that the juice increased blood flow to the heart.
Further studies have shown that it can reduce thickening of the arteries, thin the blood, lower the breakdown of LDL or bad cholesterol, increase levels of good cholesterol, decrease blood pressure and increase blood flow to the heart.
As well as the anti-oxidants, pomegranate juice is packed full of nutrients which have many associated health benefits. A glass of pomegranate juice contains 40% of the RDA of vitamin C; also present are vitamin B5, folic acid, potassium and vitamin K.
Pomegranate juice has become increasingly popular due to the recognition of its many health benefits bestowing it with ‘superfood’ status.
This sweet, ruby red juice has been subject to numerous studies which have highlighted its healthful properties resulting from its nutrient and anti-oxidant rich content.
